Noise Measurements of Race Trucks at Zandvoort

At Circuit Zandvoort, the noise level of race trucks must not exceed 95 dB(A) at the measuring post. In this report, Dr. Anne de Jong analyzes the power, spectra, and directivity of four trucks. This provides insights into how to control noise through damping and exhaust orientation.

Directivity and Damping of Race Trucks at Zandvoort

In this measurement report, ASCEE investigates the noise emissions of four race trucks at Circuit Zandvoort to ensure compliance with the 95 dB(A) standard. Power spectra and directivity were determined both while stationary (idling and at 2000 rpm) and during pass-by runs. In 6-cylinder engines, the exhaust port peak dominates at 100 Hz; the V8 two-stroke exhibits a tonal spectrum (150–250 Hz) with turbo whistle around 10 kHz. Omnidirectional measurements show that the cab reflects sound toward the rear (1–5 dB difference). Resonance dampers and directing the exhaust outlet away from Zandvoort provide effective noise reduction.

Validate your acoustic design choices with hard data

Without measurement data, acoustic product development remains a matter of guesswork. By calibrating numerical models with laboratory measurements, we make vibrations and noise predictable. This helps you avoid errors before the production phase. Discuss your design with us.
